Exploration 9

My experience in this class has been very good.  It was a little tough for me because it was a 6 hour class on a Wednesday, and I usually use Wednesdays to do laundry and clean so schedule wise it threw me off a little.
The class work has been challenging enough to where I'm learning new things, but not so tough that it messes with my other classes in terms of homework.  It was the perfect level of work for an elective course.
The only really disappointing part of this class was that I originally was taking this class to pursue the minor, but then the minor was cut/transferred to the film department.  When I spoke to my academic advisor she seemed doubtful that it would come back in time for me to graduate.
I really liked the fact that we had an incredibly small class.  We only had four students total which made shoots, presentations really slick and smooth to finish.  It also gave us a lot of one on one time with the teacher which was really positive.

Treatment for Project 2

Treatment for Interstitials :

Overall Premise
Three shorts:
  1. Feeding Yourself Through the Semester
  2. Date Night
  3. How to Thrive During Finals

Characters
The character is the same through all three pieces.

Plot Lines
Feeding Yourself Through the Semester - Follows a student as they start the semester with healthy food goals, as those goals start to slip mid semester, and how by finals the student is living in a mess and eating saltines as deadlines approach.

Date Night - Student is having significant other over for dinner and they really want to make it special.  They clean their apartment, set up a romantic atmosphere and get dressed up.  When they go to start cooking, the house blows up.  The tag line is that the student should’ve just ordered a pizza.

How to Thrive During Finals - The title is misleading, as the title stops with a record scratch and O Fortuna begins to play.  The student is in pain, struggling to work, an overlay of fire.  The end is a tagline wishing everyone good luck on their finals.

Time:
Each of these segments is between 45-50 seconds long.

Project 2 - Post Production

Post production for these wasn't horrible at all, it was mostly gathering all the pieces I needed and putting it together.  I had fun, mostly because all these are supposed to be humorous and I enjoyed putting it all together.

The most difficult part (I guess this would technically qualify as production, but I'll put it here for now), was getting that single tear in Short 3, "How to Thrive During Finals".  I was laying on the floor for about a solid 20 minutes, trying to make myself cry by watching sad animal videos and thinking sad thoughts.  I got sad, but I couldn't cry because my tear ducts apparently have performance anxiety.  About 30 minutes in, I finally got a single tear to fall and I prayed to God that the camera picked it up.  Luckily, the camera got it.

Final Shorts! (Before combination)

Here are my final shorts before combination with the rest of my classmates!

Short 1 - Feeding Yourself Through the Semester

Short 2 - Date Night

Short 3 - How to Thrive During Finals

I had fun putting these together, it was not easy, but I enjoyed it.

Project 2 - Production

Production was a little hectic mostly because we showed up late to my shoot because we were on another shoot.  I was super organized the night before and had all my shots lined up on post it notes and all the props in their respective locations.  I also totally cleaned my entire house.

We did Short 1 (Feeding Yourself Throughout the Semester) for the crew shoot.  I chose this one for the crew shoot because I felt it would be the most difficult one to shoot alone, but with a crew it would be fairly easy.  We finished at 6:16, one minute after class should've ended, so I think we did very well on time given we were late.

The most difficult part of the shoot was space.  The house I live in is fairly small, so fitting multi-cams and four crew members was a little tight.  I like to think everybody had fun though.

Project 2 Pre-production

For project 2, I really wanted to do some short and funny interstitials.  In order to figure out what I wanted to do, I did some free write in my journal and wrote out a bunch of ideas, and narrowed it down to the ones that I felt would be the most fun, most practical, and most funny to do.

This is really important to me because finals are a difficult time for most people, and sometimes a little laughter can help.  It is also kinda therapeutic to me to do a funny skit because it helps me get out my anxieties about finals.

In terms of location and talent, I chose my house as a location and myself as the talent.  The reason for this is I wanted my shoot to be as flexible as possible for my team.  Because it was my house, I was able to clean and organize it before hand and get everything just so for the shoot.  I was also really able to spend time in the place and organize exactly what wanted to do for the shots.  As for picking myself for the talent, it was also a matter of flexibility.  Because it was my shoot, I was able to be there exactly for when I was needed and didn't have to worry about a conflicting Wednesday schedule.

TENNIS PROMO FINAL!!!

Here is the final video of my Tennis Promo! Take a look!

Tennis Promo - Production

The day we went out to shoot was very hot, so it was kinda difficult standing out in the sun for long periods of time. I had fun though, the tennis players were really nice.  They did have to go back and forth between shooting and practice so we weren't sure how long we had each person.
We did get some good shots though.  For my video, we hung a big black cloth on the chainlink and had the tennis player stand and do her stuff in front of it.
Also, look at me recording sound! :D ----------->>>>>

3 Concepts for Tennis Promo

1) Girl or boy is doing extreme training, the mood is darker and grittier, they are really pushing themselves.  They are working out in the work room, doing running in slow motion.  They narrate over the commercial with the main tag of "Tennis isn't just my hobby, it's my life".  The commercial ends with them entering a tennis court, camera is low angled to show their hip and tennis racquet.

2) Girl and boy are facing off against each other in a match.  Close ups of their eyes, brimming with determination, a bead of sweat traces down their face line, one point away from winning.  The only thing that can be heard is their heavy breathing.  Their stances are tough, they both hunger for the title.  The girl throws the tennis ball up, but before she can hit it, the footage cuts to black.  The logo for the tennis tournament shows.

3) Kind of a combination of both of the previous concepts.  The girl and boy stand facing off, determination and hunger for the win.  The girl recalls all the training she did to get there, working in the gym running laps, the failure, the pain, the glory.  She narrates over the footage "I've fought with everything I've got to get here, and i'm not going to give it up easily." She throws up the ball to serve and before she can hit it, the screen cuts to black and the tennis tournament logo shows.

Tennis Promo Rough Draft

Story Boards for Tennis Promo

The Office is an American made television show, based on a British television show of the same name.  I have recently acquired Netflix, making it possible for me to watch this show and I have just recently finished watching Season 5, Episode 20 "New Boss.

Although this show exemplifies the kind of work space I would never want to be caught in (an almost insane boss, where the employees have no idea what kind of mischief he is up to), I have found myself greatly entertained by the antics of this office.  The characters play off each other very well and the writers do a great job of making it so you can feel sorry at points for the characters who have very little sense of empathy.

Keep in mind, that I have not finished this series and have about three to four seasons left, but I hope the comedy keeps up.  Here is one of my favorite clips from the episode "Frame Toby":

Why I Am Taking the Art Network Class:

I am taking this class in order to move forward to my minor in Video Content Development.  I hope to gain a better understanding of editing and storytelling.
